Inspirations: Amber Coffman - Happy Helping
Hands
This
Thanksgiving, Amber Coffman, 21, has a lot to be grateful
for. She's traveled all over the nation, Colin Powell wrote
her college recommendation letter, and she just received a
presidential appointment to the Council on Service and Civic
Participation. Still, there are probably a lot more people
who are thankful for her. That's because, for the last 12
years, Amber has been the founder and executive director of
Happy Helpers for the Homeless. Inspired
by her idol Mother Theresa, Amber saw at a very young age
"a great need beyond existing shelters and knew I couldn't
live with myself if I didn't do something about it."
And did she ever do it! Headquartered in Glen Burnie, Md.,
Happy Helpers now provides over 600 meals, as well as toiletries
and clothing each week to needy people throughout the area.
Services also include job fairs, haircuts, and health and
dental care. "Urgent needs must be met," Amber insists.
And since its startup, no matter the weather, Happy Helpers
have been there to meet those needs. Says Amber, "We
don't judge the people. We love the people."
